How Long Does It Take to Hear Back After a Cognition Interview?

Public reports do not give a standard Cognition wait time. Cognition does not publish a hiring timeline on its careers page. No candidate report gives reliable day counts between rounds.

So this page separates two things. First, what Cognition itself has said about the shape of its interview. Second, the pattern for a small team that hires at speed.

Read those per stage numbers as typical for companies of this size, not confirmed.

One fact about the process is public and unusual. The chief executive, Scott Wu, has described the interview as building your own Devin in eight hours. Devin is the company's AI software engineer product.

Reports describe that exercise running six to eight hours in one block. A round that long changes your planning more than any waiting time does.

Timeline by Stage

StageTypical waitWhat is happening
Application to first replyA few days to two weeksA recruiter or hiring manager reads the application
First call to coding screenTwo to five daysScheduling a live coding session
Coding screen to final roundThree to seven daysThe team decides whether to book the long session
The build exercise itselfSix to eight hours in one blockYou build an agent starting from an empty project, and the team judges that work
Final round to decisionTwo to five business daysInterviewers compare notes on what you built

Reports describe three stages overall. There is a first call, a live coding screen, and a final round of three to five sessions.

Customer facing roles report a different set. It includes a take home exercise done inside Devin and a timed call with a fictional customer. The content of each stage is covered in What is the Cognition interview process like?.

Does Cognition Send Rejection Emails?

No public report describes Cognition's rejection practice. The company says nothing about it in public either. Two things are still worth knowing.

A team hiring at this pace usually sends a short standard email after an early round. Written feedback on your performance is rare at any company, and rarer at one reading this many applications.

The build exercise does give the team something concrete to judge. Interviewers read the code you actually wrote, which is quicker to review than notes from a whiteboard session. That still does not tell you the decision date, and no public report gives one.

How to Follow Up

Ask at the end of every round for the next step and its date. If that date passes, wait one business day, then write once.

Hi [name], thank you for the [round] on [day]. I enjoyed working on [specific detail from the session]. I am still very interested in the [role] role at Cognition. Could you tell me where my application stands, and is there anything else that would help the team decide?

Send this once. If nothing comes back within a week, send one more. After that, stop and spend the time on other applications.

Can You Reapply, and How Soon?

Cognition does not publish a reapply rule. No candidate report describes one either. Apply again when a new role opens and your evidence has changed.

Six months is a reasonable gap. The most useful change here is real product contact. Run Devin on a task of your own and write down what broke.

Build a small agent starting from an empty project and time yourself. That work is the exact skill the long exercise tests. It also gives you a new story for the first call.

What to Wear

The early rounds are video calls. Dress the way you would for a normal work video call. A plain shirt and a tidy background are enough.

Guides report that on site work in San Francisco is required for engineering roles, so plan for a visit at some stage. The office dress is casual and no one expects a suit.

For the long build session, comfort matters more than style. Bring a charger, water, and food, because the exercise can fill most of a working day.
