How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Freshworks?"
The strongest answer connects one Freshworks product to work you have already done. Freshworks sells business software for customer service, IT service management, and sales: Freshdesk handles customer support tickets, while Freshservice handles employee IT requests.
Freshsales is the sales CRM, which is software for tracking customers and deals, and Freddy AI is the AI layer built into these products. Name the product you would join, say what you noticed when you used it, and connect it to something you built.
What the Interviewer Listens For
1. Real product knowledge. Candidate reports describe a strong focus on knowing the product, and Freshworks offers a free trial of each product, so sign up, create a few tickets, and name one thing you would change.
2. Alignment with the stated values. The Freshworks careers site states five values: "We champion our customers", "We are empowered to make an impact", "We set high standards", "We make bold moves", and "We win as one team". Choose one and prove it with a story.
3. Interest in the SaaS problem. SaaS means software sold as a subscription and shared by many customer companies, and Freshworks serves many businesses on one platform, so curiosity about multi-tenancy, which means keeping each customer's data separate on shared systems, shows genuine interest.
4. A reason for this company, not any company. Reports place the motivation question in the final HR round, and recruiters can also ask it earlier. An answer that would fit any software company scores low, so say why this product, and say it plainly.
A Three Part Structure
Part 1: The product (2 to 3 sentences). Name the Freshworks product and what you noticed when you used it.
Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one thing you built that relates to it, and include a number.
Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build there next.
Sample Answer
"I want to work at Freshworks because support tooling is where I have done my best work. At my current company I own the internal ticketing service used by our operations team. I rebuilt its assignment logic so tickets route by agent skill instead of round robin. Average first response time fell by about 40 percent after that change. The work taught me that most of the value is in the workflow and the automation, not in the ticket table. When I used Freshdesk, the automation rules and the Freddy AI reply drafts matched problems I had solved by hand for one company. I want to build that automation and AI layer for thousands of businesses instead of one team."
This answer works because every claim has evidence: the product interest comes with real use, the ownership claim comes with a number, and the direction names one specific part of the product.
Where the Question Appears
Reports place this question in the HR or managerial round at the end, and one on-campus report lists it beside questions about your college choice, past rejections, and relocation. A recruiter can also ask it in the first call, so prepare it before the screen.
Keep the same core answer in both rounds, and add one new detail the second time, such as a feature you tested after the first call. Interviewers share their feedback with each other, and an answer that changes between rounds reduces their confidence in it.
Common Mistakes
- Leaving services without a reason. Many candidates come from an IT services background, and "I want product experience" is not enough, so say what you want to own and why a product company gives you that.
- Praising the company instead of the product. Comments about growth or culture are not evidence, so name a feature, a limitation, or a workflow.
- Confusing the products. Freshdesk, Freshservice, and Freshsales solve different problems, so naming the wrong one shows that you never used them.
- Ignoring the customer. "We champion our customers" is a stated value, so bring one story where user feedback changed your plan.
- Reciting the values list. Quoting all five values without a story shows preparation rather than fit.
How to Prepare
- Learn the full loop first. Read the Freshworks interview process so your answer matches the round you are in.
- Study the product once and use it twice. The same research also helps in the Freshworks system design interview.
- Prepare one story per value. Write three stories that each end in a measurable result.
- Practice the delivery. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches answers built on evidence rather than adjectives.
- Plan the wait as well. How long it takes to hear back covers what happens after the final round.
