How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Gimlet Labs?"

The best answer connects Gimlet Labs' product to performance work you have done yourself. Gimlet Labs builds an inference cloud that runs one AI workload across many kinds of chips. Inference is the step where a trained model answers a request. The platform splits a workload into stages and sends each stage to the hardware that suits it.

The application form has no written motivation question. It asks a technical essay and whether you can work in the San Francisco office five days per week. The motivation question comes later, in the recruiter call and the onsite.

A strong answer proves three things: you understand the product, you have made a real system faster, and you want a small in-office team.

What the Interviewer Listens For

1. Real product knowledge. Gimlet Labs describes its product as a multi-silicon inference cloud. Silicon here means chips: GPUs, dataflow chips, near-memory chips, and CPUs. The platform separates prefill from decode.

Prefill is reading the input, and decode is producing the output one token at a time, and each stage runs on a different chip type. The company also builds KForge, a tool that generates GPU kernels automatically. Naming one of these parts shows you read the engineering pages.

2. Performance evidence. The inference and kernel postings ask for a performance-critical part you personally optimized. The distributed systems posting asks for a hard production issue you diagnosed. Interviewers want a story with a measurement, such as latency, throughput, memory, or cost, so pick one and give the number.

3. High ownership. The company states that it runs small teams, high ownership, and a flat organization. A flat organization has few management layers. Show a time when you owned a system from design to production with nobody checking your work daily.

4. Commitment to the office. The engineering team is in the San Francisco office five days per week. The form asks this directly. Interviewers listen for a real reason you want that, not a reluctant yes.

A Three Part Structure

Part 1: The product reason (2 to 3 sentences). Say what draws you to inference infrastructure. Name one specific part of the product.

Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one system you made faster or more reliable. Include a number.

Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build at Gimlet Labs and why in person.

Sample Answer

"I want to work at Gimlet Labs because inference cost is now the limit on what AI products can do. Your platform runs prefill and decode on different chips, which is the kind of split I have wanted to build for two years. At my current company I own the model serving path for a recommendation system. I rewrote the batching logic and moved the cache to a memory tier that fit our access pattern. That cut median latency by 38 percent and let us remove a third of our GPUs. I want to do that work across many chip types instead of one. I also want a small team in one room, because my fastest work has always happened when the whole team could argue at a whiteboard."

This answer works because every claim has proof. The product interest comes with a named feature, and the ownership claim comes with a number. The office preference comes with a reason.

Where the Question Appears

Expect the motivation question in the recruiter call first. It usually returns in the onsite, from a founder or team lead, in a deeper form. The second version asks for more evidence, not more enthusiasm.

Keep the same core answer both times. Add one new proof point later, such as a detail from an engineering blog post. Interviewers compare notes, and if your story changes between rounds they will doubt it.

Common Mistakes

  • Generic AI excitement. An answer that fits any AI company fails here. Gimlet Labs is an infrastructure company. It sells speed and efficiency to companies that run models at large scale. Say that.
  • Confusing it with the podcast company. A different company with a similar name made podcasts. Searching the wrong name produces the wrong facts. Use the company's own pages.
  • No number. The form's essay asks for evidence, such as how you measured your work. A motivation answer without a measurement contradicts the essay you already wrote.
  • A soft answer on the office. Saying "I could do five days" sounds like a no. Say why you want it, or do not apply.
  • Asking for a narrow role. The postings describe work across compilers, kernels, schedulers, and networking. If you want one small fixed role, the interviewer will see a mismatch.
