Top Cerebras Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

The themes follow from what the company builds: one novel product, built slowly, by hardware and software teams that must work together. Deep Technical Work

  1. Tell me about the hardest technical problem you have solved. Pick a problem that took days or weeks, not hours. Cerebras engineers work on long problems, and your story should show you can sustain that.
  2. Describe the most difficult bug you have debugged. Choose a systems bug if possible: a race condition, a memory error, or a performance collapse. Explain your process step by step, including the wrong paths.
  3. Tell me about a time you improved performance. Bring a before number and an after number. Explain how you measured before you changed anything.

Ownership and Persistence

  1. Tell me about a project you owned end to end. Name the goal, your decisions, and the result. Include what you would do differently.
  2. Describe a time a project failed or slipped. Hardware schedules slip, and the company knows it. Show honest analysis and the change you made afterward.
  3. Tell me about a time you had to learn something far outside your specialty. Working near hardware often requires this. Describe your learning method.

Collaboration Across Teams

  1. Describe a technical disagreement and how it was resolved. Interviewers listen for evidence over ego. Data or a small experiment should settle the question, not seniority.
  2. Tell me about a time you worked with a team whose expertise differed from yours. This maps directly to hardware-software collaboration. Show how you translated between vocabularies.

Motivation

A Worked Sample Outline

The debugging question matters most here, because it reveals how you think alone under uncertainty.

  • Situation: "Our service crashed about once a week, with no pattern in the logs."
  • Task: "I owned reliability that quarter, and the crash blocked a customer commitment."
  • Action: "I added targeted logging around the crash sites and reproduced it in a stress test. The cause was two threads writing shared state without a lock. I fixed the locking and added a test that fails if the pattern returns."
  • Result: "No crashes in the next three months, and the stress test caught one similar bug later."

The strongest part is the reproduction step. Interviewers at systems companies listen for controlled reproduction before any fix. Keep the story under two minutes. Offer more detail on the tricky part if the interviewer asks. That invitation to go deeper usually earns better marks than a long first telling.

What Interviewers Listen For

  • Method under uncertainty. Steps, measurements, and hypotheses, not luck.
  • Numbers. Every story should end with a measurable result.

  • Honesty about failure. Novel hardware means frequent surprises. A candidate who never describes a failure sounds either junior or careless with the truth.
