Top Cisco Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

Cisco behavioral questions test its conscious culture: accountability, empathy, and ethics. Cisco gives behavioral evaluation a large share of interview time. Several candidate reports estimate about half of the total. Interviewers expect the STAR method, which stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. Prepare stories about failure, teamwork, and customers before your first interview. This page lists ten questions to expect, grouped by theme.

Quick Overview

ThemeWhat interviewers listen for
AccountabilityOwnership of failures without blaming others
Empathy and inclusionRespect for different people and views
Customer focusDecisions made for the user, not for convenience
InnovationImprovements you started without being asked

Questions About Accountability

  1. Tell me about a time you failed. What did you do next?
  2. Describe a mistake that affected other people. How did you handle it?
  3. Tell me about a commitment you could not keep.

Cisco interviewers listen closely to failure stories. They want ownership: what you did, what you learned, what changed. Never use your story to explain why others were at fault. Awareness of how your actions affected teammates counts as much as the fix.

Questions About Empathy and Inclusion

  1. Tell me about working with someone very different from you.
  2. Describe a time you disagreed with a teammate. How was it resolved?
  3. Tell me about a time you helped a struggling colleague.

Cisco describes an inclusive environment as part of its culture. Show that you listen before judging. In conflict stories, present the other person's view fairly. End with the relationship, not only the task outcome.

Questions About Customer Focus

  1. Tell me about a time you did more than the requirement asked for a customer or user.
  2. Describe a decision where customer needs and engineering convenience disagreed.

Cisco sells to businesses that depend on its equipment. Downtime for a customer can stop a hospital or a bank. Interviewers here want proof that you understand this responsibility. Pick stories where you chose reliability or user needs over an easy option. Numbers help: fewer support tickets, faster recovery, higher uptime.

Questions About Innovation and Motivation

  1. Tell me about a process or tool you improved on your own initiative.
  2. Why do you want to work at Cisco?

For question 9, small improvements are fine if the initiative was yours. For question 10, name a product area and a skills match. A full structure and sample are in How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Cisco?"

A Worked Sample Outline

Take question 2: a mistake that affected other people.

  • Situation (2 sentences). "I changed a shared build script without announcing it. The next morning, three teams had broken builds."
  • Task (1 sentence). "I had to restore their builds and show the teams they could rely on me again."
  • Action (3 sentences). "I reverted the change within the hour and messaged each affected team directly. I explained what happened and what I would do differently. Then I proposed a review rule for shared scripts, which the team adopted."
  • Result (2 sentences). "All teams were building again before lunch. Since the review rule, shared script changes have caused zero broken builds."

This outline fits Cisco because it shows accountability, direct communication, and a lasting fix. The apology is described as an action, not as a feeling. Notice the story is under two minutes when spoken. Interviewers ask follow-up questions, so leave room for them. Short honest stories with numbers beat long polished ones.
