Top Gusto Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

Gusto's behavioral interview is values driven. Interviewers ask for real examples of customer focus, ownership, collaboration, and learning from feedback. Candidates report that values questions appear in the onsite behavioral round and in the hiring manager conversation. Below are ten questions candidates report, grouped by theme, with guidance for each.

One fact should shape your preparation. Candidates report that people who pass all coding rounds still get rejected on values. Gusto treats this round as a real filter, not a formality.

Customer Focus Questions

Gusto sells payroll and benefits software to small businesses. Its first value is a service mindset toward those customers.

  1. Tell me about a time you put a customer's needs above your own plan. Pick a story where you changed technical work because of user feedback. Name the customer problem in plain terms.
  2. Describe a time you fixed a problem the customer had not reported yet. Interviewers listen for proactive care, not just reaction. Monitoring, alerts, or data you noticed all work here.
  3. How have you handled an angry user or client? Show calm listening first, then the fix, then the follow up.

Ownership Questions

  1. Tell me about a project you owned from start to finish. Ownership means you felt responsible for the result, not only your tasks. Describe decisions you made without being asked.
  2. Describe a time something broke in production because of your change. Payroll software punishes mistakes, so honesty matters here. Explain the fix, the communication, and what you changed afterward.
  3. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision but committed to it. Show that you argued clearly, then supported the outcome fully.

Collaboration Questions

Gusto engineers pair often and value direct communication.

  1. Tell me about a conflict with a teammate and how you resolved it. Focus on the conversation you had, not the person's flaws. End with the working relationship afterward.
  2. Describe a time you helped a teammate succeed at a cost to your own work. Interviewers listen for genuine collaboration, not scorekeeping.
  3. How do you give difficult feedback? Give a real example. Direct, kind, and specific is the pattern they want.

Growth Questions

  1. Tell me about the hardest feedback you have received. The strong answer names the feedback exactly, then shows changed behavior with evidence.

A Worked Sample Answer

Use the STAR method for every question. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. It keeps answers short and complete.

Here is an outline for question one, the most important theme at Gusto.

  • Situation. "Our team was building a reporting dashboard for small business owners. Support tickets showed owners could not find their quarterly tax totals."
  • Task. "I was the engineer on the reporting area that quarter. My planned work was a performance improvement."
  • Action. "I proposed delaying my performance work by one sprint. I interviewed five customers with our support lead, then built a one-page tax summary. I paired with a designer to keep it readable for non-accountants."
  • Result. "Tickets about tax totals dropped by about 70 percent that quarter. Two customers mentioned the page in reviews. The performance work shipped one sprint later with no harm."

This outline works because every part is concrete. It shows customer care, ownership of a decision, and collaboration in one story.

What Gusto Listens For

Three signals separate strong answers from weak ones.

Specifics. Names, numbers, and dates make a story believable. Vague answers sound invented.

Your individual actions. Say "I" for your decisions and "we" for team outcomes. Interviewers need to know what you did.

Reflection. End stories with what you learned or changed. Gusto's culture values feedback, so show you absorb it.
