Top Supabase Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

Supabase behavioral questions test three publicly stated hiring filters: low ego, intrinsic motivation, and high quality standards. The founders describe these traits openly as what they hire for. The company is also fully remote and asynchronous, meaning work moves through written updates rather than meetings. So expect questions about autonomy, self started work, and collaboration without supervision. There is no public list of official questions, so treat these as the themes the culture makes likely. Below are ten questions to prepare, grouped by theme, with guidance on what interviewers listen for.

Autonomy and Async Work

  1. Tell me about something you shipped with no manager involvement.
  2. How do you keep people informed when you work alone for days?

Evidence matters more than claims here. Describe concrete habits: written weekly updates, small frequent pull requests, decision documents. If you have not worked remotely, use examples of working with people you rarely meet. Numbers make these stories concrete: days worked alone, updates written, decisions documented. Describe your preferred written update format, and why it works for readers in other time zones.

Intrinsic Motivation

  1. What have you built recently that nobody asked you to build?
  2. Why do you work on developer tools or open source?

Side projects, contributions, and self directed learning are the natural material. The interviewer wants proof that you create without external pressure. A small finished project beats a large abandoned one. If your work is closed source, describe internal tools you volunteered to build.

Low Ego

  1. Tell me about a time someone's idea replaced yours. What did you do?
  2. Describe the most useful criticism you have ever received.

Answer with real events, not humility statements. Show that you argued honestly, lost, and then supported the better idea fully. Avoid stories that quietly prove you were right all along. Naming exactly what the criticism changed in your work makes the story believable.

Quality Standards

  1. Tell me about a time you refused to ship something. Why?
  2. Describe how you decide when code is good enough.

The platform holds other people's production data, so quality stories matter. Explain your actual bar: tests, review, monitoring, and honest documentation. Include one example where you fixed something nobody would have noticed. Avoid perfectionism stories: shipping late forever is not a quality standard.

Motivation and Fit

  1. Why do you want to work at Supabase?
  2. Which part of the product would you improve first, and why?

Question 9 deserves separate preparation. How to answer "Why do you want to work at Supabase?" gives a full structure and sample. Question 10 rewards real product usage, so build something small on the platform before interviewing. Base your improvement idea on a real problem you met while building, like a slow query or a confusing error message.

A Worked Sample Outline

The most important question is the self started project. Structure it with STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

  • Situation: "Our team lost hours each week to a manual data export." One sentence with a number.
  • Task: "Nobody owned it, so I decided to fix it myself." The initiative is the point, so state it plainly.
  • Action: The steps you took, including how you kept others informed in writing.
  • Result: "The export became one command, saving about four hours weekly, and two other teams adopted it." End with numbers and adoption.

Keep the story under two minutes. Expect follow up questions about why you chose it and what you gave up to do it. Prepare a second story as backup. Interviewers sometimes ask for another example, and reusing the first one weakens both.
