What Font Does OpenAI Use? OpenAI Sans

OpenAI uses OpenAI Sans, a custom sans-serif typeface made for the company. You see it on the OpenAI website, in ChatGPT, and across brand material.

A custom typeface means it was drawn for one owner and is not sold. OpenAI has not published a download or a public license for it, so you cannot install it.

Before OpenAI Sans, the site and ChatGPT used Soehne, a paid family from Klim Type Foundry. Older pages and some documents may still show it.

That last row answers a common question. Nothing about the font travels with copied text. What you see after pasting is whatever font your document uses.

Why You Cannot Download OpenAI Sans

Large companies commission a typeface so their material looks like theirs and nobody else's. The file is licensed to the company alone.

Files labeled "OpenAI Sans download" appear on font sites. Treat them with care. They are usually a different family renamed, and installing a font from an unknown source is a security risk.

Using a leaked brand font in your own work is also a legal risk. Pick a substitute instead.

Close Substitutes You Can License

No free font is identical. These four get close to the same clean, neutral, screen-first look.

How to Set It Up in CSS

Name your first choice, then list fallbacks. The browser uses the first font it can load.

Two rules keep the result clean.

Always end the list with a generic family such as sans-serif.
Load only the weights you use. Each extra weight slows the page.

A site with a custom family names that family first. If the file does not load, visitors see the next font in the list instead.

Matching the Look, Not Just the Font

The typeface is a small part of why the OpenAI interface looks the way it does. Three other choices matter as much.

Generous spacing. Line height near 1.5 for body text, and wide margins.
Few weights. One regular and one medium or semibold, and nothing else.
Low contrast color. Near black text on near white, rather than pure black on pure white.

Copy those three and Inter will get you most of the way.

How to Prepare

Pick a substitute and test it at real sizes. Read a full paragraph at 16 pixels before you decide.
Check the license before shipping. Free for personal use is not the same as free for commercial use.
Skip any site offering a brand font for free. If a foundry does not sell it, nobody else can give it to you.
