Amazon Interview Success Rate: What Are Your Chances of Passing?

Amazon does not publish a pass rate for any interview stage. Nobody outside the company has the real number.

What exists is candidate reporting. Candidates commonly report that roughly one in five people who reach the onsite loop end up with an offer. Read that as a rough range, not a measured figure.

Your own chance is not the average. It moves with your preparation, your level and how well your stories match the Leadership Principles.

Where People Are Cut

Think in stages, not in one overall number. Each stage has a different failure cause.

StageMain reason people are cut
Resume screenNo match to the job requirements, or no referral
Online assessmentWrong answers or solutions that are too slow
Phone screenOne unsolved coding question, or silent problem solving
Onsite loopWeak Leadership Principle stories, more often than weak code
DebriefA Concern rating that no other interviewer offsets

The online assessment removes the largest group early. The onsite loop removes the largest group late.

Candidates report that behavioral answers, not algorithms, decide most close calls. Amazon assigns Leadership Principles to each interviewer, and a strong coder with vague stories still fails.

What Changes Your Odds Most

Three factors show up in nearly every candidate account.

The first is level. An SDE II or senior loop expects wider scope and more ownership in your examples. Applying above your real level lowers your chance sharply.

The second is story depth. You need specific examples with your own actions and measured results. Generic answers score as Mild Strength at best.

The third is the Bar Raiser. This is a trained interviewer from another team who can block the hire. They check that you would raise the team's average, not just meet it. See what an Amazon bar raiser does.

Internship and New Grad Chances

Internship odds are quoted often and never sourced. Amazon does not publish them.

The intern funnel is shaped differently. The online assessment carries most of the filtering. It usually has coding problems plus a work style survey and a work simulation.

If you pass the assessment, the interview itself is shorter. Candidates report one or two rounds rather than a full five interview loop. Leadership Principles still appear, and you can use university projects and internships as examples.

Does AWS Have Different Odds?

AWS is part of Amazon and runs the same hiring process. There is no separate AWS success rate to find.

What differs is the question mix. AWS engineering loops lean harder on distributed systems, storage and failure handling. The behavioral bar is the same.

A Realistic Way to Judge Yourself

Stop asking about the site-wide rate. It includes people who applied with no preparation at all.

Ask three questions instead.

Can you solve a medium difficulty problem in 25 minutes while explaining it? Can you tell eight distinct stories with numbers in them? Can you name the Leadership Principle behind each story?

Three yes answers put you well above the average applicant. A no marks exactly what to work on next.

How to Prepare

  • Drill coding patterns, not random problems. Grokking the Coding Interview sorts questions by the technique they need, which is how Amazon reuses them.
  • Target the Amazon question set. Grokking the Amazon Coding Interview focuses on what Amazon actually asks.
  • Write 10 stories in STAR format. STAR means Situation, Task, Action and Result. Map each story to two Leadership Principles. Use the top behavioral questions for Amazon as the list.
  • Put a number in every result. Latency cut, cost saved, users served. Numbers are what interviewers can write down.
  • Prepare for the design round at mid level and above. Grokking the System Design Interview covers the patterns those rounds test.
  • Read the full loop before you sit it. The Amazon interview guide walks through each stage.
  • Rehearse out loud with someone else. Mock interviews expose the habits you cannot hear in your own practice.
