What Is the Ocado Technology Interview Process Like? (Round by Round)
Candidates report four to five steps at Ocado Technology, spread over about two to four weeks. The reported sequence is a recruiter call, an online coding test, a technical interview, a pair programming session, and a values interview. Candidates report roughly six hours of interview time in total, with difficulty near the middle of the scale, close to medium level coding problems. The exact rounds vary by role and by office, because Ocado Technology hires across several countries, including the UK and Poland, where the Krakow and Wroclaw teams build parts of the same platform.
Quick Overview
| Stage | Format | What is evaluated |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Recruiter call | About 30 minutes, phone or video | Background, motivation, and practical details |
| 2. Online coding test | Timed, on Codility | Working code within a required time and memory cost |
| 3. Technical interview | About 45 to 60 minutes, video | Algorithms, your main language, and past projects |
| 4. Pair programming | Up to two hours, in a real editor | Collaboration on an existing codebase |
| 5. Values interview | Phone or video, length varies | Examples that match the five stated values |
| Design questions | A separate discussion, or inside the technical round | System design, scalability, and caching choices |
Stage 1: Recruiter Call
A short call about your background, your reasons for applying, and the practical details. Interviewers ask the motivation question here first. Candidates also report being asked for an example of each company value during an early phone conversation. Prepare that answer with how to answer why Ocado Technology.
Stage 2: Online Coding Test
Candidates report a timed test on Codility, which is an online platform for coding assessments. Reports describe about three tasks, each with a required time and space cost, where time cost means how the running time grows as the input grows. Write a correct solution first, then improve it if time remains. Graduate applicants report this test straight after the application form, then a recorded video interview, then an assessment center that adds a group exercise.
Stage 3: Technical Interview
About 45 to 60 minutes, usually on video. Candidates report two parts: algorithm questions, and a detailed discussion of the projects on your resume. Expect data structures, sorting, and searching, often in Java, because much of the backend platform is written in Java with Spring Boot. For the project part, prepare the decisions you made and the alternatives you rejected.
Stage 4: Pair Programming
Candidates describe this as the hardest round, and reports describe a session of up to two hours with a senior engineer or a team leader. You receive an existing project with missing or broken parts, and you complete it together. Some candidates report a role play, where one interviewer acts as a project manager and another acts as a junior colleague. For onsite sessions, candidates report that the company provides the laptop.
Say what you are doing while you do it. Ask for the requirements before you write code, keep the code readable, and add tests. Several candidates report failing at this stage, so practice coding out loud with another person first.
Stage 5: Values Interview
Ocado Group publishes five values: Learn fast, Craft smart, Aligned autonomy, Build trust, and Collective potential. This round asks for examples from your own work that match them. Prepare one short story per value, and end each story with a measurable result.
System Design Questions
Senior candidates report a design discussion inside the technical round, with questions on performance, storage, scalability, and caching. Graduate candidates report a system design interview at the assessment center, so this round is not limited to senior roles. The reported questions are general purpose rather than warehouse specific. The topics and one full walkthrough are in the Ocado Technology system design interview.
Timeline and Decision
Most reports describe two to four weeks from first contact to a decision. Some reports describe much longer waits, including months of silence after a completed round. Feedback after a rejection is inconsistent: a few candidates received detailed reasons on request, and many received nothing. The stage by stage waits are collected in how long it takes to hear back.
Questions to Ask Them
Every round includes time for your questions, so prepare three. Useful ones here: how work is divided between the UK and Poland offices, how one platform serves several competing grocers, and how on-call works for software that controls machines. Ocado Group also describes digital twins, which are simulated copies of a warehouse, so ask how code is tested in simulation before it reaches a live site. A specific question proves you studied the product.
How to Prepare
- Practice medium level problems. Grokking the Coding Interview covers the patterns behind the test and the technical round.
- Rehearse pair programming. Code with a friend for an hour, explain every step out loud, and finish something that runs.
- Prepare the design round. Grokking the System Design Interview teaches the queues, caches, and data stores these questions use.
- Write five value stories. One story per published value, each with a number in the result.
