What Is the SAP Interview Process Like? (Round by Round)

The SAP developer process usually has five stages over four to six weeks. Candidates report a recruiter screen, an online assessment, two to three technical rounds, a managerial round, and an HR close. The technical rounds are often elimination rounds, meaning a weak round ends the process. SAP tends to reply to applications within one to two weeks. The exact shape varies by country, by lab, and by team, so confirm your plan with the recruiter.

Quick Overview

StageFormatWhat is evaluated
1. Recruiter screenShort callBackground, motivation, logistics
2. Online assessmentTimed testCoding problems, sometimes multiple choice
3. Technical rounds2 to 3 interviewsData structures, system design, projects
4. Managerial round45 to 60 minutesTeam fit, culture, working style
5. HR closeShort callSalary, benefits, start date

Round 1: Recruiter Screen

A recruiter calls to check your background and interest. The call also confirms location, work permission, and notice period. Prepare a short answer to the motivation question, because it appears here first. Our guide on how to answer why you want to work at SAP gives a structure and a sample answer.

Round 2: Online Assessment

A timed test with coding problems, and sometimes multiple choice on technical concepts. Difficulty is usually easy to medium. Arrays, strings, hash maps, and simple dynamic programming are the common topics. Practice finishing problems fast, because time pressure removes more candidates than difficulty does. Read every constraint before coding. Assessments often hide the intended approach in the input limits.

Round 3: Technical Interviews

Two to three video interviews follow, usually with engineers from the hiring team. Candidates report three recurring parts.

  • Live coding. Data structure and algorithm problems, solved while explaining your thinking.
  • Project discussion. Deep questions about your resume projects. Expect "why" questions about every design choice you mention. Prepare the numbers behind each project: users, requests, and cost.
  • Design questions. Senior candidates get architecture discussions. See what to expect in the SAP system design interview for the enterprise-flavored question types.

Language choice is usually flexible. Java and C++ are common at SAP, and many cloud teams use JavaScript or TypeScript. Some product teams also use ABAP, SAP's own programming language, but interviews rarely require it.

Round 4: Managerial Round

A hiring manager checks how you work with others. Expect behavioral questions about teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. SAP's culture framework, called "How We Run", shapes this round. Candidates who show reliability and direct communication score well. Prepare with top SAP behavioral interview questions.

Round 5: HR Close

A short call about salary expectations, benefits, and dates. This is a negotiation, so know your number before the call. If you have another offer, say so plainly.

What Makes SAP Different

Two things separate SAP from a typical product company loop. First, the project discussion weighs more. Interviewers spend real time inside your resume, and shallow knowledge of your own work fails the round. Second, culture is scored openly. The "How We Run" behaviors, such as keeping promises and direct communication, appear as actual interview criteria. Candidates report technical passes that still ended in rejection at the managerial round. Prepare both halves with equal effort.

Timeline Notes

Four to six weeks is the common total. University hiring events can compress everything into days. Senior roles sometimes add an extra design round, which extends the plan by a week or two. If a week passes with no update, a short polite email to the recruiter is normal and expected.

How to Prepare

  • Practice coding under time. Grokking the Coding Interview teaches problem patterns, which is the fastest way to improve speed.
  • Prepare two project stories in depth. Every technical round can start from your resume. Know the numbers and the trade-offs of your own work.
  • Learn the standard design method. Grokking the System Design Interview gives the structure interviewers expect, even for enterprise questions.
  • Write your behavioral stories early. The managerial round rewards prepared, direct answers with concrete results.
