What Is the Second Interview at Tesla?

At Tesla the second interview is usually a call with the hiring manager. It runs 30 to 45 minutes, and it is a conversation rather than a test.

This surprises people. At most large companies the manager speaks to you last, after the technical rounds.

Tesla does it early because managers hold real hiring authority there. The manager decides whether the loop is worth running at all.

Some teams do use a technical screen as the second round instead. Your recruiter will say which one you have, so ask when the invitation arrives.

The call covers four things, usually in this order.

• Your background. A short walk through your last two roles, not your whole history.
• One project in depth. Why you made each choice, and what you would change now.
• The team's work. What they are building, and where you would fit.
• Practical items. Start date, location, and whether the role level matches your experience.

There is rarely live coding. There are often sharp technical follow-up questions.

Expect the manager to push one level deeper than your answer. That is the Tesla style, and it is not hostile.

What the manager is deciding

Three questions sit behind the call.

Can you do the work this team has in front of it. Not the general role, the actual project.

Will you move at the pace of the team. Tesla teams ship fast, and managers screen for that openly.

Do you want this specific job. A candidate applying to the company rather than the team is easy to spot.

How to answer well

Lead with the result, then the detail. Managers have limited time and they are testing your judgement.

Give one number in each story. Scale, time saved or failures removed all work.

Say what you own. Replace "we" with "I" when you describe your own part.

Ask two prepared questions about the engineering. What is the hardest problem on the roadmap is a good one.

Do not over-prepare a script. This round rewards a normal technical conversation.

What happens next

If the call goes well, the recruiter moves you to the technical stages. Candidates report waiting three to ten days for that email.

Some teams send the online assessment first, others go straight to a live screen. Both are normal.

Silence for two weeks is common and is not always a rejection. Hiring pauses and headcount reviews are the usual cause.

Send one short thank-you note the same day. Name one thing from the call, so the manager remembers the conversation.

Then ask the recruiter a direct question. What are the next rounds, and when are they scheduled. A clear answer tells you where you stand.
