What Is the TCS NQT Exam Pattern?

The TCS National Qualifier Test, called the NQT, is the entrance test for TCS fresher hiring. The widely reported pattern is one integrated test of about 190 minutes, in two mandatory parts. The Foundation part runs about 75 minutes and contains numerical ability, verbal ability, and reasoning ability. The Advanced part runs about 115 minutes and contains advanced quantitative and reasoning questions, plus a coding section of about 90 minutes.

The test is delivered on the TCS iON platform, and reports agree that there is no negative marking. This pattern is revised between hiring cycles, so confirm the current one in the official notification for your own drive.

Quick Overview

SectionQuestions and timeWhat it tests
Numerical abilityAbout 20 questions, about 25 minutesSchool arithmetic and data interpretation
Verbal abilityAbout 25 questions, about 25 minutesReading, grammar, and written English
Reasoning abilityAbout 20 questions, about 25 minutesPuzzles, series, and logical deduction
Advanced quantitative and reasoningAbout 15 questions, about 25 minutesHarder aptitude and multi step reasoning
Advanced codingMost reports say 2 problems, about 90 minutesWriting working programs against test cases

Numerical Ability

This is the first Foundation subsection, reported at about 20 questions in about 25 minutes. Questions come from percentages, ratios, profit and loss, time and work, speed and distance, probability, and data interpretation from charts. The arithmetic itself is school level, so the difficulty comes from the number of questions per minute.

Verbal Ability

This is the largest Foundation subsection by question count, reported at about 25 questions in about 25 minutes. Questions include sentence completion, error detection, reading comprehension, and para jumbles. Some reports also describe a written English task, such as composing a short professional email from given points.

Reasoning Ability

This is the third Foundation subsection, reported at about 20 questions in about 25 minutes. Topics include seating arrangement, blood relations, coding and decoding, syllogisms, number series, and data sufficiency. Every candidate must attempt all three Foundation subsections, because the Foundation part is the qualifying half of the test.

Advanced Quantitative and Reasoning

This is the first Advanced subsection, reported at about 15 questions in about 25 minutes. It asks the Foundation topics at greater difficulty, with more steps per question and less time per question. Your marks here decide whether you are considered for the higher hiring tracks.

Advanced Coding

This subsection is where candidate scores differ most. Most reports describe two problems in about 90 minutes, and some reports describe three, which is one reason to read your own notification carefully. Problems are reported at the level of arrays, strings, searching, sorting, simple mathematics, and basic data structures. Common languages such as C, C++, Java, and Python are reported as available.

How the Test Is Timed

Each subsection is separately timed, and reports state that you cannot return to a subsection after it ends. Reports also state that you cannot go back to a previous question once you move forward. Those two rules change how you should write the test.

Decide each question once, and answer it before you move on. Because there is no negative marking, mark your best guess instead of leaving a question blank. A wrong answer costs exactly what an empty answer costs.

Eligibility

TCS publishes eligibility rules with each hiring notification, and the commonly published rules are these. Candidates need 60 percent or a 6.0 CGPA in class ten, class twelve, and graduation, with no rounding upward. At most one active backlog is allowed at the time of the test, and all backlogs must be cleared before joining.

The overall academic gap must not exceed 24 months, and gaps must be explained with documents. Full time degrees are required, with part time and correspondence courses excluded. Age limits are also published for each drive. Treat every number here as a rule from recent notifications rather than a permanent rule, and check your own notification.

How the Test Is Scored and What Happens Next

There is no negative marking in either part, and the test is reported as non adaptive, so the difficulty does not change with your answers. Your score decides which interview track you enter, and the reported tracks are Ninja, Digital, and Prime. Ninja shortlisting is reported to depend mainly on the Foundation part.

Digital and Prime shortlisting is reported to require strong marks in the Advanced part as well, including the coding section. Candidates who clear the test are called for interviews, described in the TCS interview process. Reports also state that the score remains usable for a later cycle within a stated validity period, so one good attempt can serve more than one drive.

How to Prepare

  • Fix the coding section first. It is where most candidates lose marks, and Grokking the Coding Interview teaches the patterns behind almost every test problem.
  • Practice under a timer. Write full mock tests with the subsection timings above, because you cannot make up lost time once a subsection ends.
  • Learn what a proctored test involves. Read what an online technical assessment is before your first attempt.
  • Read the official notification. Sections, timings, and eligibility rules are revised between cycles, and only the notification for your drive is current.
  • Prepare the interviews in parallel. Study how to answer why you want to work at TCS while you wait for the result.
  • Expect a wait after the test. Results and interview calls take time, as described in how long it takes to hear back after a TCS interview.
