What Is the Zoho Aptitude Test Pattern?
Zoho's first round is a single paper that mixes general aptitude with code output questions. Candidates report about 20 to 30 questions in 60 to 75 minutes. Roughly half the questions are quantitative aptitude, and the rest show a short program and ask what it prints. Older reports describe C snippets, while recent reports describe Java snippets too.
Some drives run the paper at a Zoho office with pen and paper, and others run it online. Zoho does not publish a branded name for this test, so candidates simply call it the aptitude round or round one.
This pattern changes between hiring cycles. Question counts, timing, and the language used in the snippets all vary across reported drives. Treat the table below as the reported pattern, and confirm the current one in the official notification for your drive.
Quick Overview
| Section | Questions and time | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| General aptitude | About 10 to 20 questions, reported within a 60 to 75 minute paper | Arithmetic, ratios, work and time, number sense |
| Code output | About 10 to 25 questions, in the same paper | Reading code exactly, pointers, loops, recursion |
The General Aptitude Section
Reported topics are standard placement aptitude topics. They include percentages, ratios and proportion, averages, time and work, time and distance, mixtures and alligation, probability, number systems, HCF and LCM, and simple series. Reports describe medium difficulty with little time, which means speed decides the score more than difficulty does. Several accounts also mention short logical puzzles in this section.
The Code Output Section
Each question gives a short program and asks for its output. Reported topics include pointers and pointer arithmetic, arrays, strings, nested loops, recursion, typecasting, operators and precedence, structures and unions, dynamic memory allocation, and file handling. Some drives use fill in the blank questions instead of multiple choice, so you write the answer rather than pick one. This is the section that separates candidates, because tracing a program by hand is a different skill from writing one.
Eligibility
Eligibility is set per drive, not once for the company. Zoho's own listings for software developer roles state an experience band of zero to a few years, ask for an engineering or computer science degree, and name the graduating batches that may apply. One widely cited preparation guide reports that some drives accepted candidates from any stream, including candidates with backlogs. That is a report about past drives, not a published company rule, so read the notification for your own drive before assuming you qualify.
How the Test Is Scored and What Happens Next
This round is an elimination gate. Only a small fraction of candidates clear it in large drives, and the rest are not called again. Candidate reports do not describe negative marking, and one preparation site states that there is none, but confirm the marking rules printed on your paper before you start guessing.
In campus and pooled drives, results are often announced within hours, and the coding round follows the same afternoon. Candidates who clear this paper move to the coding round, which is described in the Zoho interview process.
How This Differs From an Online Assessment Elsewhere
Many companies send a link and grade your code automatically. Zoho's first round is often supervised in person, and it grades reading rather than writing. If you have only prepared for automated screens, read what an online technical assessment involves and then practice on paper. Writing output by hand, without a compiler, is the exact skill this round measures.
How to Prepare
- Practice code tracing without a compiler. Take short programs with pointers, recursion, and nested loops, predict the output, and only then run them.
- Time every aptitude set. Give yourself under one minute per question, because reports describe the paper as medium in difficulty but short in time.
- Revise C fundamentals even if you code in Java. Pointer and memory questions appear often, and they are the most common source of lost marks.
- Build coding speed for the next round. Grokking the Coding Interview covers the array, string, and tree patterns that the round after this one uses.
- Prepare the interview answers early. The motivation question and the reply timelines both matter once you have cleared the paper.
