Spotify became well known for describing its engineering setup as squads, tribes, chapters and guilds. A squad is a small team that owns a product area. A chapter groups people with the same craft across squads.

Be careful with this in an interview. Spotify has said publicly that this description was a snapshot, not a fixed framework it still follows everywhere.

It is still useful to know. Job listings often name the squad or the product area you would join.

Levels and Entry Points

Spotify posts roles from early career up to staff and principal. Manager tracks run alongside the individual contributor track.

There are three common ways in.

• Direct hire. Apply to a posted role that matches your current level.
• Internship. Spotify runs student programmes in engineering, data and business. These are seasonal and close early.
• Early career programmes. Spotify has run graduate and associate programmes in some regions. Availability changes, so check the careers site rather than an older article.

Where the Jobs Are

Spotify has offices in several countries, with large engineering groups in Stockholm and New York. Other offices cover ads, content and regional operations.

Spotify announced a policy it calls Work From Anywhere. It lets many employees choose whether to work from home or an office, within rules about country and tax.

Remote is not offered on every role. The listing states the work mode, so read it before applying.
