DocuSign HackerRank Questions: What the Online Test Asks

Candidates report a DocuSign HackerRank test of two coding problems in 60 to 90 minutes. Some report a third short problem or a few multiple choice questions on language details and SQL.

The difficulty reported is easy to medium. Clean working code matters more here than an unusual algorithm.

DocuSign does not publish its question bank. Nobody can give you the real questions, and any site claiming to sell them is unreliable.

What you can do is prepare the shapes. The topics below are the ones candidates keep describing.

The topics that actually appear

TopicPractice problem of the same shapePattern to learn
Arrays and hash mapsTwo Sum, Group AnagramsHash map lookup
String processingValid Parentheses, Longest Substring Without Repeating CharactersSliding window, stack
Sorting and intervalsMerge Intervals, Meeting RoomsSort then sweep

TreesBinary Tree Level Order Traversal, Validate BSTBreadth first and depth first search
Graphs and gridsNumber of IslandsFlood fill

DesignLRU CacheHash map with a linked list

Work through that list in order. The first four rows cover most of what candidates report seeing.

Why the test is easier than you expect

DocuSign is filtering, not ranking. The test removes people who cannot produce working code under time pressure.

That changes how you should practise. Speed and correctness on medium problems beat depth on hard ones.

Aim to finish a medium problem in 20 to 25 minutes. That includes reading, coding and testing.

How the test is scored

HackerRank runs your code against hidden test cases. Your score is the share of cases that pass.

Partial credit is normal. A working slow solution scores more than an elegant unfinished one.

Edge cases carry a lot of those hidden cases. Empty input, a single element, duplicates and the largest allowed size are the usual four.

Write a brute force answer first if you are stuck. Then improve it if time remains.

A plan for the 90 minutes

  1. Read both problems first, for three minutes. Start with the one you understand faster.
  2. Write the examples by hand. Two minutes here prevents a wrong solution.
  3. Say the approach in one sentence. If you cannot, you do not have an approach yet.
  4. Code the simple version. Get something that passes the sample cases.
  5. Test the four edge cases. Empty, one element, duplicates, maximum size.
  6. Improve the complexity only if time allows. A passing solution is worth more than a fast failure.
  7. Leave five minutes at the end. Run everything once more before you submit.

Choosing a language

Use the language you write fastest. The test is not scored on language choice.

Java, Python, JavaScript, C# and Go are all supported on HackerRank. Pick the one whose standard library you know without searching.

Know three things in that language without thinking. How to read input, how to sort with a custom comparison, and how to use a hash map.

What comes after the test

Passing the online test leads to a technical phone screen. The problems there are similar in difficulty but you explain your thinking out loud.

System design appears later, for mid-level and senior roles. Read the DocuSign system design interview to see what that round covers.

The full sequence of rounds is described in the DocuSign interview process.
