Why Do You Want to Join Datadog? Mission, Values, and a Sample Answer

Datadog's application form asks the same question in longer words. The field reads: "Tell us why you are interested in building an engineering career at Datadog." It is a free text box. Candidates report writing about 150 to 250 words there.
What Datadog Builds
Datadog is a monitoring and security platform for cloud applications. Monitoring means collecting signals from running software so teams see problems early.
The product joins three kinds of data in one place. Metrics are numbers over time, such as requests per second. Traces follow a single request across many services. Logs are the text records each service writes.
Datadog describes its purpose as removing the separation between development, operations, and security teams. One shared view of the system is how it does that. Say that idea in your own words, not in marketing words.

Datadog's careers pages describe the culture it hires for. Candidates report that interviewers use these words by name.

What Makes an Answer Specific
Three things separate a specific answer from a generic one.
- A product detail. Name an area you have used or read about. Distributed tracing, log management, and real user monitoring are good examples.
- A number from your own work. "I cut our alert noise by half" is stronger than "I care about reliability."
- A reason that fits this company only. Growth and good culture are true of many firms. Observability at this scale is not.
Sample Answer for an Experienced Engineer
"I have spent three years on the on-call rotation for a payments service. Most of my time went to finding where a slow request actually stopped. We ran three separate tools for metrics, logs, and traces. Joining them by hand cost us hours in every incident.
That is the problem Datadog solves in one platform. My work on our tracing setup cut the median time to find a root cause from 40 minutes to 12 minutes. I want to build that for thousands of teams instead of one.
The value that fits me best is pragmatism. I shipped a simple sampling rule first, then built the full version."
That answer names one product area, two numbers, and one value.

"My systems course project was a small metrics collector for a shared cluster. I learned how hard it is to store time series data cheaply and still query it fast. My version stopped keeping up at about 5,000 points per second.
Datadog handles that problem at a scale I cannot reach alone. That gap is exactly what I want to learn next. I want that to be my job."
What to Avoid
- Do not say the company is growing fast. That reason expires.
- Do not repeat the product page. Your interviewer has read it.
- Do not leave out the role. Say which team's work you want and why.
- Do not copy a sample word for word. Swap in your own numbers.
