Stripe engineer levels run from L1 to L7. L3 is the senior engineer level, L4 is Staff, and L5 is Senior Staff.
The part that surprises people is the titles. Stripe's job postings use only three engineering titles across those seven levels: Software Engineer, Staff Software Engineer, and Senior Staff Software Engineer. L1, L2 and L3 all read Software Engineer, so a new graduate and a senior engineer can show the same title.
Stripe states the compression in its postings. A listing titled Software Engineer, Bridge says Stripe is open to hiring engineers from SWE through Senior Staff, which spans about four of the seven levels.
This guide explains what each level owns, the years of experience it takes, and what public sources report for pay. It also maps Stripe levels to Google, Meta and Amazon.
Stripe Levels in One Table
| Stripe Level | Public Title | Typical Years of Experience | Google / Meta Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| L1 | Software Engineer | 0 to 2 | Google L3 / Meta E3 |
| L2 | Software Engineer | 2 to 5 | Google L4 / Meta E4 |
| L3 | Software Engineer | 5 to 10+ | Google L5 / Meta E5 |
| L4 | Staff Software Engineer | 10+ | Google L6 / Meta E6 |
| L5 | Senior Staff Software Engineer | 10 to 15+ | Google L7 / Meta E7 |
| L6 | no public title posted | very rare | Google L8 / Meta E8 |
| L7 | no public title posted | very rare | Google L9 / Meta E9 |
Stripe does not publish a level matrix. The titles and years of experience above come from Stripe's own job postings, the level numbers and pay come from levels.fyi, and the seniority mapping comes from The Pragmatic Engineer's reporting on Stripe engineering. The two rows above L5 are inferred rather than reported directly, so treat the table as a guide rather than an official document.
Why Three Levels Share One Title
Stripe had no engineering titles at all for its first years. Nelson Elhage, a former Stripe engineer, has written that he left shortly before titles were introduced, and that it was not public who held the Staff Engineer level.
Titles exist now, but they stayed flat, and there is no Senior Software Engineer title at Stripe.
The practical effect is that a Stripe title tells you almost nothing about level. Two engineers both titled Software Engineer can be several hundred thousand dollars apart in total pay, because one is L1 and the other is L3. So compare Stripe offers by level number and total compensation, never by title.
L1: Entry Level
L1 is Stripe's entry level, for new graduates and early career hires. Stripe's early career postings set a hard limit: candidates should have no more than 18 months of professional experience, not counting internships.
Pay data on levels.fyi shows L1 engineers in the United States with zero to one years of experience and median total compensation near $212K.
An L1 works on defined tasks inside one team, with code review and design guidance from more senior engineers. Employee reports describe L1 as a level engineers move through in about a year rather than stay at.
L2: Software Engineer
L2 is Stripe's mid-level engineer. Reported data on levels.fyi puts the median at three to four years of experience, with total compensation near $287K.
An L2 owns features end to end inside a team. They design the parts they build, review other people's code, and work without close supervision.
The step to L3 is about scope rather than coding skill. An L2 delivers work that someone else scoped. An L3 decides what should be built and carries it across team boundaries.
Engineers posting on Blind describe four to five years of experience as an L2 hire rather than an L3 hire. Stripe level numbers sit below the market for the same work, which is the most common mistake in comparing a Stripe offer.
L3: The Senior Level With No Senior Title
L3 is Stripe's senior engineer level, and it is the equivalent of Google L5 and Meta E5. The public title is still Software Engineer, so an L3 with six years and an L3 with fifteen read the same on a profile.
L3 is also where the band is widest. A band is the span of scope and pay that a single level covers. Engineers report that L3 and L4 are each split into sub-bands, written as L3a and L3b, which change pay without changing the title. Stripe does not confirm this, so treat it as a report.
L3 is reported to be Stripe's first terminal level. A terminal level is one you can stay at for a whole career with no promotion pressure. Employee and aggregator reports place L1 and L2 under a time limit, and describe L3, L4 and L5 as levels with no such limit.
levels.fyi puts the median United States total compensation at L3 near 448K, against about 287K at L2. That is a very large step for a promotion that does not change what your title says. Check levels.fyi for current numbers before any offer conversation.
Senior Stripe loops ask about API design and distributed systems rather than puzzles, and candidates report that the Stripe system design interview is the round that sets the level.
Working through complete system design problems is the highest value preparation for an L3 or L4 loop.
L4: Staff Software Engineer
L4 is the first level with its own public title.
Stripe's Staff Software Engineer postings ask for 10 or more years of professional software development experience. One API Platform posting asks for 12 or more years of technical experience plus 5 or more years in a strategic technical leadership role.
An L4 sets technical direction for an area and leads work that several teams then build. The scope is an organization rather than a team.
That same API Platform listing gives a United States base salary range of 224,000 to 336,000, before equity and bonus. Median total compensation at L4 on levels.fyi is near $662K, the largest single step in the reported data.
L5: Senior Staff Software Engineer
L5 is Senior Staff Software Engineer, and Stripe does post it publicly. A Senior Staff listing for the Stripe Dashboard describes leading technical strategy across more than 50 engineers, and asks for roughly 10 to 15 years of industry experience. Its United States base salary range is 271,200 to 406,800.
levels.fyi reports median total compensation near $784K at L5.
Engineers on Blind describe L5 as rare and mostly filled from inside, and say an opening depends on whether an organization needs the level rather than on a candidate's years.
L6 and L7
The Pragmatic Engineer reports that Stripe levels continue to L7, which it describes as the equivalent of a distinguished engineer elsewhere.
Public information above L5 is very limited. Reported pay on levels.fyi stops at L6, with a single median near $860K, and there is no data at all at L7. Stripe does not post public titles for either level, so if you are offered one, ask the recruiter what scope it covers.
How Stripe Pay Works
One Stripe posting usually covers more than one level. Every engineering listing carries the same sentence:
This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and location.
That sentence is why the posted ranges are so wide. The Secrets Infrastructure listing below spans about $117,000 of base salary on its own.
These posted United States base ranges come from Stripe's own careers site:
| Stripe Posting | Posted US Base Range |
|---|---|
| Software Engineer, Early Career | 122,100 to 134,400 |
| Software Engineer, Secrets Infrastructure | 142,600 to 259,600 |
| Software Engineer, Bridge | 190,400 to 285,600 |
| Staff Software Engineer, API Platform | 224,000 to 336,000 |
| Senior Staff Software Engineer, Stripe Dashboard | 271,200 to 406,800 |
Base salary is only part of the number. Our answer on the base salary for a Stripe software engineer covers how base compares to the rest of a Stripe package.
Stripe is a private company, so the equity in an offer is not stock you can sell on a public market. Stripe has announced tender offers, which are company-arranged sales that let current and former employees sell shares. Compensation advisers report that Stripe grants restricted stock units, a promise of shares that converts on a fixed schedule, and that those units only turn into money at one of those sales.
Because the level decision accounts for most of the pay difference, settle the target level before the loop is scheduled. Candidates report that Stripe will move on numbers, which our answer on whether Stripe negotiates salary covers.
How Stripe Levels Compare to Google, Meta, and Amazon
Stripe level numbers sit two lower than Google's for the same work, and three lower than Amazon's.
| Career Stage | Stripe | Meta | Amazon | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | L1 | L3 | E3 | L4 (SDE I) |
| Mid | L2 | L4 | E4 | L5 (SDE II) |
| Senior | L3 | L5 | E5 | L6 (SDE III) |
| Staff | L4 | L6 | E6 | L7 (Principal) |
The rule for comparing: add two to a Stripe level to get the Google level. Stripe L3 is Google L5. Stripe L4 is Google L6.
Above Staff the names stop matching. Stripe L5 is Senior Staff, closest to Google L7 and Meta E7.
That gap is why a Stripe L3 offer and a Google L3 offer are not comparable. Google L3 is entry level. Stripe L3 is senior.
For the full five-company comparison, see the FAANG software engineer levels guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is L3 at Stripe? L3 is Stripe's senior engineer level, and it is the equivalent of Google L5 and Meta E5. The public title is still Software Engineer, so the seniority is invisible from outside. Median United States total compensation reported to levels.fyi is near $448K.
What is L4 at Stripe? L4 is Staff Software Engineer, the first Stripe level with its own public title. Stripe's Staff postings ask for 10 or more years of experience, and an L4 sets technical direction across several teams. Median total compensation reported to levels.fyi is near $662K.
Does Stripe have a Senior Software Engineer title? No. Stripe's engineering postings use three titles: Software Engineer, Staff Software Engineer, and Senior Staff Software Engineer. The senior level is L3, and it carries the plain Software Engineer title.
How many years of experience do you need for Stripe L3? Usually five or more, though Stripe levels on scope rather than on years. Engineers posting on Blind describe four to five years as an L2 hire, so the step to L3 needs evidence of work that crossed team boundaries.
Is Stripe L3 the same as Google L3? No, and the mistake is expensive. Stripe L3 is a senior engineer and matches Google L5. Google L3 is an entry level engineer and matches Stripe L1. Add two to a Stripe level to get the Google level.
What is the terminal level at Stripe? L3, according to employee and aggregator reports. A terminal level is one where you can stay for a whole career without promotion pressure. Those same reports describe L1 and L2 as levels with a time limit, which makes the first two steps less optional than at most large companies.
How many levels does Stripe have for engineers? Seven, L1 through L7, based on The Pragmatic Engineer's reporting and the level list levels.fyi keeps for Stripe. Reported pay data runs out after L6, so the top level is barely documented in public.
Why does one Stripe job posting cover several levels? Stripe says so in the posting. Every engineering listing states that the salary range may be inclusive of several career levels and will be narrowed during the interview process. One Software Engineer listing is open from SWE through Senior Staff, so the loop sets the level, not the listing.
