Failover Mechanics
1. Three Parts, and the Hard Ones Are Not the Mechanism
A failover is three separate things, and almost all the attention goes to the third.
- Detect. Something notices the region is unhealthy.
- Decide. Something concludes that failing over is the right response.
- Redirect. Traffic moves.
Redirect is the engineering part, and it is the easy part. Detection and the decision are where failovers go wrong, because both of them are judgments made with incomplete information about a system that is partially working.
