1. Three Words That Get Used Interchangeably

The three terms sit in a strict relationship, and most confusion about reliability targets comes from treating them as one.

  • The service level indicator (SLI) is a measurement. A number you can compute from data the system already produces, such as the fraction of requests that returned successfully in under 300 ms.
  • The service level objective (SLO) is a target for that measurement over a window. "99.9 percent of requests, measured over 30 days."
  • The service level agreement (SLA) is a contract with a consequence
