1. What a Partition Key Decides

In a distributed store, the partition key is not a field. It is the physical layout, and it decides four things at once.

  • Where the data is stored. The key determines which node holds the item, so the key distribution is the load distribution.
  • What one request can return. A single read touches one partition, so anything you want together must share a key.
  • What can be atomic. Transactions and conditional writes are cheap within a partition and expensive or unavailable across them.
