1. Why the Rewrite Fails

The instinct when a system has become hard to change is to build its replacement alongside it and switch over when the replacement is ready. This fails often enough that the pattern is worth understanding rather than just avoiding.

Three reasons, and they compound.

  • The old system keeps changing. It is in production serving customers, so it accumulates fixes and features for the entire duration of the rebuild. The replacement is aiming at something that moves.
  • **The requirements exist only in the old code
