Questions for engineering managers
Two questions that only managers get asked, and where to go for the rest of a manager loop.
Question 1: Tell me about a time you managed someone who was underperforming.
Intention of the question: This is the question that separates managers from senior engineers. The interviewer wants to know whether you acted, how early, and whether you were fair about it.
Pitfalls to avoid: Avoid a story whose only ending is that the person left. Do not describe them as a bad hire. Say what you tried, in what order, and how long you gave it.
