When an interviewer asks,

"What is your team’s vision and how did you set it?"

They want to understand several aspects of your leadership and strategic thinking:

  1. Vision Setting: Can you articulate a clear, inspiring vision for your team?
  2. Strategic Planning: How do you align the team's goals with the overall objectives of the organization?
  3. Team Involvement: How do you involve your team in creating and committing to this vision?
  4. Communication Skills: Can you effectively communicate this vision to ensure everyone is on the same page?

Structuring Response Using the STAR Method

Question:

"What is your team’s vision and how did you set it?"

Answer: Situation: "In my role as an engineering manager at TechCorp, I noticed that our team was often working in silos and lacked a unified direction. This was leading to inefficiencies and missed opportunities for collaboration."

Task: "My task was to create a compelling vision that would align the team’s efforts, promote collaboration, and support the company’s strategic goals of innovation and customer satisfaction."

Action: "I started by organizing a series of workshops with the team to gather their input and understand their aspirations and concerns.

We discussed the company’s goals and how our team could contribute to achieving them. I encouraged everyone to share their ideas and perspectives, which helped in creating a sense of ownership and commitment to the vision.

After gathering this input, I synthesized it into a cohesive vision statement: 'To be the leading team in developing innovative, customer-centric solutions through collaboration and continuous improvement.'

I communicated this vision during a team meeting and through various channels, such as emails and our internal communication platform. I also set up quarterly review sessions to ensure we were on track and to make any necessary adjustments."

Result: "The new vision significantly improved team alignment and collaboration. We saw a 20% increase in project completion rates and a 15% improvement in customer satisfaction scores within six months. The team was more motivated and engaged, and our enhanced focus on innovation led to the successful launch of two new features that received positive feedback from customers."

Pitfalls To Avoid

  1. Vagueness: Avoid providing a vague or generic vision statement. Be specific about your team’s goals and how they align with the broader company objectives.

  2. Top-Down Approach: Don’t present the vision as something you created in isolation. Highlight how you involved your team in the process to foster buy-in and commitment.

  3. Ignoring Implementation: Mention how you communicated the vision and ensured it was implemented. A vision without a clear plan for execution is ineffective.
