In 2023, a federal court in New York was hearing Mata v. Avianca. A passenger, Roberto Mata, said a metal serving cart had struck his knee on an Avianca flight. When the airline asked the court to dismiss the case, his lawyers answered with a filing that cited court decisions, among them Varghese v. China Southern Airlines. The airline's lawyers wrote that they could not locate most of the cited cases, and the judge could not find them either. The lawyer who wrote the filing had used ChatGPT, and it had invented six of the decisions, with quotes and citations
