The Architecture of a Service Mesh

A service mesh is built from two parts. One part carries the traffic between services. The other part holds the rules and hands them out. This lesson describes both parts, then the three things they make possible together.

The Data Plane

The data plane is the set of proxies, one next to every service instance. Every request entering or leaving a service passes through its proxy. Envoy is the most common of these proxies. Istio uses it, and Linkerd ships its own. The proxy is a separate process. So it behaves the same for a Java service and a Python service.
