Interview Question: Critique This API

The interview question is different:

Here is an existing API. What is wrong with it, and how would you improve it?

You are not being asked to design your preferred contract from an empty page.

You are being asked to read what callers already have, identify consequences, rank them, and propose repairs that respect existing use. The interviewer is grading whether you can separate a dangerous defect from an inconvenience and whether you can explain a problem without simply declaring the author wrong.
