Requirements Gathering for an API

A system design interview often begins with scale. An API design interview should begin with a different question: who calls this, and what are they trying to finish?

Requirements gathering here is not a survey. It is a short search for the facts that change the contract. A fact that changes nothing about the operations, fields, limits, or failures does not belong in the first five minutes.

1. Begin with "Who Calls?"

"Who uses the product?" and "Who calls the API?" are related but different questions.
