The Reliability Contract

A partner engineer asks:

"How long should our client wait before giving up?"

Without a documented deadline, clients choose different timeouts. One waits two seconds, another two minutes, and a gateway may stop waiting after 30 seconds while the server continues working.

Reliability is not the statement "the service is highly available." It is a set of caller-visible promises about duration, failure, retry, partial outcomes, availability, and latency.
