The Reliability Contract
A partner engineer asks:
"How long should our client wait before giving up?"
Nobody can answer. One caller waits two seconds. Another waits two minutes. A gateway gives up at 30 seconds. The server sometimes continues working after all three have left.
Reliability is not the statement "the service is highly available." It is a set of caller-visible promises about duration, failure, retry, partial outcomes, availability, and latency.
