Numbers Worth Estimating on the Client

A useful estimate helps you choose a page size, image size, storage limit, or request policy. It is not a test of how many numbers you can calculate during an interview.

State the assumptions, show the calculation, and explain the decision it affects. Then say what you would measure before releasing the feature.

All numbers below are exercise examples. We use decimal units: 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. A megabit is one million bits; one byte contains eight bits.

1. Estimate a page's transfer size

Assume a page contains 20 posts with 2 KB of metadata each
