Step 3: Back-of-the-Envelope Estimation

Step 2 set the requirements. Before we design anything else, we estimate the scale they imply. The numbers below guide the choices we make in the steps ahead.

Summary:

  • About 100 million users, with 10 to 20 million active daily. Peak use can reach tens of millions at once.
  • Up to 50 million new events a day: hundreds of writes per second on average, a few thousand at peak.
  • Reads dominate, at roughly 100 to 200 million a day, about ten times the write volume.
