Step 3: Back-of-the-Envelope Capacity Estimation

Before choosing any technology, we estimate the scale of the system. The numbers below are rough, but they decide what the design must handle.

User base. Assume about 1 billion registered users, close to Gmail's scale. About 500 million of them are daily active users, or DAU: people who log in on a given day to read or send mail. Usage spreads across time zones, so tens of millions of users can be online at the same moment.
