High-level Architecture

A GFS cluster has one master, many ChunkServers, and the clients that talk to both.

Chunks

Files in GFS tend to be very large, so GFS breaks each one into fixed-size pieces called chunks. Each chunk is 64 megabytes.

Chunk handle

GFS gives each chunk a globally unique, immutable 64-bit ID, called a chunk handle. That allows for 2^{64} unique chunks. At 64 MB per chunk, that upper limit holds more than 10^9 exa-bytes, far more than the system will ever need.

Since files are split into chunks, GFS has one core job: map files to chunks
