Partitioning and High-level Architecture
We've covered how clients talk to BigTable. Now we step back, and look at how BigTable is actually built and how it spreads data across machines.
Table partitioning
A single instance of a BigTable implementation is known as a cluster. Each cluster can store a number of tables. Every table is split into multiple Tablets, contiguous chunks of the table, each about 100 to 200 MB in size.
A Tablet holds a contiguous range of rows, and the table is broken into Tablets at row boundaries. Every table starts out as a single Tablet
