17. PACELC Theorem

CAP theorem only says what happens during a network partition. PACELC also covers the normal case, when nothing has failed.

Background

A distributed system cannot avoid partitions, so the CAP theorem says it must choose between consistency and availability. ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) databases, like the RDBMSs MySQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server, chose consistency. They refuse to respond if they cannot check with their peers
