4. Leader and Follower

Replicated data needs one place where conflicting writes get resolved. The leader and follower pattern names a single server for that job.

Background

Distributed systems keep several copies of the same data. This gives fault tolerance and higher availability. One way to keep those copies consistent is quorum. A read or a write only counts once a majority of the nodes take part in it. That rule fixes consistency, but it creates a new problem. The system now needs a majority of replicas up at all times, or the operation fails. So quorum lowers availability instead. Quorum also has gaps

Etcd, like Chubby also uses leader-follower, with the leader being elected using Raft.
