"Commit log stores all the writes in sequential order, with each new write appended to the end, whereas MemTable stores data in the sorted order of partition key and clustering columns."

So both commitlog and memtable store the data from a write operation. I am just wondering, why is it written at both the locations? i.e. memtable and commitlog? Why not write to SSTable from commitlog?
