BigTable Refinements

BigTable now survives failures and keeps its files tidy through compaction. The next step is speed: a handful of refinements that make reads faster and writes cheaper, without changing the basic design.

Locality groups

BigTable's refinements start with locality groups. A locality group is a set of column families that a client chooses to group together. BigTable builds a separate SSTable for each one. That split has three benefits:

  • Grouping columns that are usually read together, into the same locality group, makes those reads faster.
