Compaction

Every MemTable flush adds one more SSTable to disk. Over time, many small files accumulate. This lesson looks at how Cassandra cleans that up: compaction.

How does compaction work in Cassandra?

SSTables are the immutable files Cassandra writes to disk when it flushes a MemTable, its in-memory write buffer. That immutability is part of why Cassandra's writes are fast. Immutable means Cassandra never edits a file in place, only writes new ones. That flushing never stops, so the number of SSTables on disk keeps growing
