Master Election and Chubby Events

We just watched a client survive a master failover. Now we look at the other side: what the newly elected master itself does, and the events Chubby sends to clients.

Initializing a newly elected master

A newly elected master works through the following steps, in order.

  1. It picks a new epoch number, a count that separates it from the previous master. Clients must include this number on every call. The master rejects any call that uses an older number, so it never answers an old packet that was meant for its predecessor. 2
