Back of the Envelope Math for AI Systems

Know the Vocabulary

This lesson uses the terms below many times. Read them once now, and come back here when a later section needs one.

  • Back-of-the-envelope estimation: Rough math done out loud to size a system. The name comes from doing the math on any scrap of paper, such as the back of an envelope.
  • Order of magnitude: The size of a number in powers of ten. For example, 5,000 and 50,000 differ by one order of magnitude.
  • Token: The unit of text a large language model (LLM) reads and writes, and the unit that providers bill by.
