Know the Vocabulary

This lesson uses the terms below many times. Read them once now, and come back here when a later section needs one.

• Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): A design in which the system first finds relevant passages for a question. It then gives those passages to a large language model (LLM), which writes the answer from them.
• Chunk: A short passage cut from a document, often a few hundred tokens long. A token is a word or a piece of a word. Retrieval searches and returns chunks, not whole documents.
