Know the Vocabulary

This lesson uses the terms below many times. Read them once now, and come back here when a later section needs one.

  • Query: The words a user types into the search box, such as "red running shoes size 10."
  • Query understanding: The first stage of search, which cleans up the query, adds words with the same meaning, and works out what the user wants.
  • Retrieval: The stage that pulls a few hundred possible matches out of the whole catalog. It is also called candidate generation, and the matches it returns are called candidates.
