Know the Vocabulary

This lesson uses the terms below many times. Read them once now, and come back here when a later section needs one.

  • ID: A code that names one user or one item, such as user_84302915. It tells you which one, but it carries no meaning by itself.
  • Vector: A list of numbers, such as (0.9, 0.1, 0.4).
  • Embedding: A short vector of learned numbers that stands for one user or one item. Users and items that behave alike get similar numbers.
  • Dot product: A score for how well two vectors match. Multiply the numbers in matching positions and add the results
