Know the Vocabulary

This lesson uses the terms below many times. Read them once now, and come back here when a later section needs one.

  • Chunk: A focused passage cut from a document, usually a few hundred words or fewer. It is the unit that retrieval works with.
  • Retrieval: Finding the chunks that best match a question, so that a later step can use them.
  • Vector: A list of numbers, such as (0.12, 0.80, 0.05).
  • Embedding: A vector that encodes the meaning of a piece of text. Texts with similar meanings get similar vectors.
