Primary-Replica vs Peer-to-Peer Replication

A user in Tokyo presses Save. Your database's primary node sits in Virginia. The write crosses the Pacific and returns about 180 milliseconds later. Someone on the team asks the obvious question. Why not let a node in Tokyo accept writes too?
