Reverse Proxy

1. The Pattern

A server that stands in front of your real servers. It receives every request, handles the boundary work, and forwards the request onward. Clients never talk to your application servers directly. They talk to the proxy.

To see why the primitive exists, picture the alternative. Your application server is connected straight to the internet. Now the app code owns the TLS certificates. TLS is the encryption layer under HTTPS, and a certificate proves the server's identity. The app serves images and JavaScript alongside business logic
