Horizontal Scaling
1. The Incident
The store's app tier has been one server for years, and that server kept getting larger. Then the last lesson's limits were reached. The next instance size up costs too much, and one host failure took checkout down for 40 minutes. The plan is obvious and overdue: run two servers. A simple traffic splitter goes in front and sends half the requests to each. It is deployed Tuesday morning.
Tuesday afternoon, the problems begin.
