What you'll learn in Grokking Microsoft Coding Interview

  • The 50 coding questions asked most often in Microsoft interviews, drawn from real Microsoft loops rather than from a generic set.
  • Microsoft staples worked in full: Spiral Matrix, Valid Sudoku, Multiply Strings, Excel Sheet Column Title, Restore IP Addresses, and Inorder Successor in BST.
  • Every problem attempted in an in-browser editor before you see any part of the answer.
  • Time and space complexity analysis on each one, stated separately.
  • Solutions in Python, Java, C++, JavaScript, Go, and C#.
  • 15 easy, 25 medium, and 10 hard problems, weighted the way the interviews themselves are.
  • The hard problems Microsoft returns to: Median of Two Sorted Arrays, Regular Expression Matching, Largest Rectangle in Histogram, Word Ladder and Word Ladder II, and Longest Valid Parentheses.
  • An algorithm walkthrough on every solution, so you take away the reasoning rather than a memorised block of code.
  • Strong coverage of the areas Microsoft favours: string manipulation, matrices, binary trees and binary search trees, stacks, and classic dynamic programming.
  • Fifty problems is enough range to stop recognising titles and start recognising the structure underneath them.

The courses which have "grokking" before them, are exceptionally well put together! These courses magically condense 3 years of CS in short bite-size courses and lectures (I have tried Grokking System Design Interview, OODI, and Coding patterns). The Grokking courses are godsent, to be honest.

FAQs

It is the 50 coding questions asked most frequently in Microsoft interviews. Each one comes as a problem lesson you attempt in an in-browser editor, followed by a separate solution lesson with the approach, an algorithm walkthrough, code in six languages, and the time and space complexity.

Engineers interviewing at Microsoft, at any level. It assumes you already know your data structures and patterns and want company-specific practice for the final stretch. If the fundamentals are not solid yet, start with Grokking the Coding Interview and return to this closer to the date.

Fifty, among them Buddy Strings, Can Place Flowers, Plus One, Merge Two Sorted Lists, Excel Sheet Column Title, Restore IP Addresses, Spiral Matrix, Valid Sudoku, Multiply Strings, Score of Parentheses, Inorder Successor in BST, Distribute Coins in Binary Tree, Number of Islands, Next Permutation, 132 Pattern, Median of Two Sorted Arrays, Regular Expression Matching, Largest Rectangle in Histogram, Word Ladder, and Longest Valid Parentheses.

Broadly a standard data structures and algorithms loop, with a noticeable preference for string and array manipulation, matrix problems, and tree work over the heavier graph theory some companies favour. The problem mix here reflects that. Communication is weighted heavily, which is why the solutions explain the route to the answer rather than only the answer itself.

15 easy, 25 medium, and 10 hard. Most of your interview time will be spent in the medium band, so that is the largest chapter, but the hard chapter contains several problems Microsoft asks often enough to be worth the effort.

Python, Java, C++, JavaScript, Go, and C#. Every solution is given in all six, which is worth noting for Microsoft specifically, since C# turns up in its interviews more often than in most.

It is targeted preparation for the coding rounds rather than for the whole loop. Microsoft interviews also cover system design at most levels and always include behavioral questions, and no list can guarantee the questions you get. The aim of these 50 is recognition of the underlying shapes, not coverage of a fixed set.

Grokking the Coding Interview teaches the patterns from the ground up across a much larger problem set. This one assumes them and narrows to a single company, so it works best as the last phase of preparation rather than the first.

Text-based, with runnable code and diagrams. You want to attempt, run, fail, and reread, and that cycle is far quicker on a page than in a video.
