How Long Does It Take to Hear Back After a Citadel Interview?
Most Citadel candidates report four to eight weeks from first contact to a decision. Stage by stage waits are reported less often, so read any single number as one person's experience.
The online assessment usually returns the quickest result. Citadel does not publish a target time for it, so use the table below as a guide.
The end of the process is the slowest part. Citadel sends interviewer notes to an internal hiring committee before any offer. That review adds days after your last round.
Timeline by Stage
The table mixes reported waits with the typical pattern for companies of this size, not confirmed by Citadel.
| Stage | Typical wait | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| Application to recruiter reply | One to three weeks | Resume review, and many applications get no reply |
| Recruiter screen to online assessment | A few days | You receive a HackerRank link and a deadline |
| Online assessment to result | Two to seven days | Hidden tests score your code, then a person reviews it |
| Phone screen to onsite invite | About one week | Scheduling across several teams |
| Onsite to decision | One to three weeks | The hiring committee compares interviewer notes |
Two details explain the length. The HackerRank assessment runs about 75 minutes and removes most candidates. The onsite is three to four rounds of about 45 minutes, plus team fit conversations.
Citadel and Citadel Securities are separate firms. One is a hedge fund and the other is a market maker. Each one hires on its own schedule, so waits differ between them.
Citadel also runs a separate campus process for interns. Its timing follows the recruiting season, not the date you applied.
Does Citadel Send Rejection Emails?
Citadel does not publish its rejection practice. So this section describes the common pattern, not a stated policy.
Once a recruiter is in contact with you, a reply usually arrives either way. The message is short and standard, and it gives no detail about your rounds.
Silence is most likely at the two screening steps. The application and the HackerRank assessment remove the largest share of candidates, and neither step involves a conversation.
Scores stay internal. Citadel does not publish assessment results or hiring committee notes for candidates.
One question is still worth asking. Ask the recruiter which stage ended the process. Some recruiters will say, and that single fact tells you what to fix.
How to Follow Up
Send one short email to your recruiter. Wait five business days after a screen. Wait ten business days after the onsite, because the committee review adds time.
Hi [name], thank you for the time on Tuesday. I enjoyed the order book design question and the follow ups about latency. Could you tell me the status of my application and the next step? I am glad to wait if the committee needs more time.
Send it once. If nothing comes back in another week, send one more. After that, treat the role as closed and keep applying elsewhere.
Can You Reapply, and How Soon?
Citadel does not publish a reapply rule. Candidates do not report a fixed waiting period either.
About one year is the usual advice for firms of this size. Apply sooner only if a new team opens a role that fits you better.
One point here is specific to Citadel. The hedge fund and Citadel Securities are separate employers. An application to one is not an application to the other.
A second attempt needs a better assessment score above all. That is the stage that removes most people.
What to Wear
The early rounds are on video for most candidates. The recruiter call and the technical screens are usually remote.
Wear a plain shirt in one solid color. Avoid thin stripes and shiny fabric, because cameras render them badly. Test your camera, microphone, and lighting before the call.
The onsite is often in an office, and Citadel has offices in several cities. Ask the recruiter which office runs your loop and whether the day is in person.
Business casual is the right level for an engineering loop. A clean shirt and dark trousers work well. Arrive about ten minutes early.
How to Prepare
- Learn the full loop first. Read What is the Citadel interview process like? so you know which stage you are waiting on.
- Prepare the design round early. The reported questions are order books and market data feeds. See What to expect in the Citadel system design interview.
- Rehearse the team fit conversations. Citadel evaluates behavior inside technical rounds, as covered in Top Citadel behavioral interview questions.
- Drill algorithms against a timer. Grokking the Coding Interview builds the patterns the assessment tests.
- Practice the recruiter conversation. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview covers how to discuss timing, offers, and deadlines.
